Believe it or not nearly 8 out of 10 people do face the acne problem. Pimples are always frustrating and it takes a lot to get rid of them. Before consulting dermatologists consider trying home remedies for pimples.

Pimples can be treated by medication such as anti-inflammatory, antibiotics, Vitamin A derivatives, and topical antiseptic and so on. The commonly used drugs for acne treatment are benzoyl peroxide and salicylic acid.

The most common side-effects of these drugs include irritation in skin, dryness and redness. Sometimes even severe allergic reactions.

However, we can even treat acne by simple home remedies and making some changes in lifestyle.

First, we should start drinking a lot of water and start doing at least 30 minutes of exercise 4-5 days a week. It will help to detoxify our body naturally and will increase the metabolism which will reduce your chances of getting pimples.

In addition to that, make it a habit to wash your face with simple water now and then. It will remove the dirt from your face and prevent dust particles from coagulating inside your pores. It will allow the skin to breathe.

1. Hereditary

Although, there is no single gene that we can consider responsible for acne it still can run in families. The simple reason is that some family lines have such features that they overproduce sebum (skin oil that keeps skin and hair moisturized) and shed dead skin more frequently which may block the pores resulting in getting pimples.

2. Hormonal changes

We must have heard this from our mother to midwife talks that as the age increase the body undergoes some hormonal changes. Especially in the case of women pregnancy, menstrual cycle and at the time of menopause. The spiralling androgen levels can lead to the overproduction of sebum and can cause pimples.

3. Excessive use of cosmetics

Wearing excessive makeup remarkably for long hours can also cause acne. There are many factors to be considered here.

Firstly, we should never compromise with the quality of cosmetics and always check its ingredients before buying. The common contents of cosmetics that are responsible for clogged pores and acne are acetylated lanolin, benzaldehyde, isopropyl palmitate, almond oil, algae extract, D & C Red, Ethylhexyl palmitate, lauroyl lysine, lauric acid, stearic acid, wheat germ oil, shea butter, and sodium chloride.

Secondly, before going to bed makeup should be cleaned well with the help of rose water or cleansing milk.

4. Food Habits

Refined carbohydrates, dairy products, fast foods, foods rich in omega 6 fats and whey protein powder can cause acne problems. So, you should avoid eating these food items at least for the time you are having pimples.

5. Stress

It is still a matter of research to know the exact impact of stress on pimples but the case studies point that the changes in our body due to stress can cause pimples and can even worsen the pre-existing ones.

Effective Home remedies for pimples

1. Icing the Pimple

The first thing you want to get rid of whenever you get a pimple is the inflammation and redness. For that ice gives a great relief. It can decrease the inflammation and in certain cases, the pimple is even hard to notice. It reduces the redness also to a great extent. So, this is our first choice in home remedies for pimples. What you have to do is just clean your face and apply ice (wrapped in a thin cloth or paper towel whichever you prefer) directly on the pimple for one minute. After that check the inflammation, it must be reduced or suppressed. And there would be a relief in pain. If you have a big size pimple then do follow up a few more times. You should do that at proper intervals of 4-5 minutes.

Note- It doesn’t go well with blackheads.

2. Tea Tree Oil

Tea tree oil is used in many acne treatment creams nowadays due to its anti-bacterial and anti-inflammatory properties, which makes it a great home remedy for pimples. However, you can even use it directly.

For that, all you have to do is take a drop of tea tree oil and apply it directly over the pimple. Leave it for good 15-20 minutes. Clean it with clean cotton.


You can also combine a few drops of tea tree oil with half a teaspoon of aloe vera gel. Apply it on the face. Let it dry for some time and wash the face with normal water. Try it 3-4 times a week for good results.

3. Green Tea

The polyphenols present in green tea brings down the secretion of sebum. Furthermore, it has antimicrobial and antioxidant properties that help to curb acne problems.

There are multiple applications of green tea.

Boil it and cool down and apply directly to the face.

It can also be combined with few drops of tea tree oil and applied directly to the acne.

Honey and green tea also serve the purpose.

4. Honey and cinnamon (Dalchini)

Honey and cinnamon have anti-bacterial properties. Addedly, cinnamaldehyde present in cinnamon has anti-inflammatory properties, making it a perfect home remedy for pimples. So honey and cinnamon ( Dalchini) not only reduce pimple-causing bacterial but also puts a check on it.

Its application is quite simple

  • Mix three teaspoons of honey and one teaspoon of cinnamon and make a paste of it.
  • Before going to bed apply the paste over the acne and leave it overnight.
  • In the morning wash the face with lukewarm water.
  • Apply it 3-4 times a week or as per need.

5. Moisturize with aloe vera

Aloe vera also has anti-inflammatory and anti-bacterial properties which keep a check on the growth of bacteria.

Moreover, after the application of ice and doing other inflation and redness removing remedies the skin needs healing and moisturizing. Aloe Vera serves the same purpose.

Extract fresh aloe vera from its leaves or use any other aloe vera gel available in the market. You can even add 2-3 mints in it for better results. Apply it over the area that you already treated with ice and other ingredients. You can leave it for 15-20 minutes or even overnight.  Wash your face with water in the morning.

6. Coconut oil

Coconut has antibacterial properties. It has Vitamin E ( however relatively in less amount around 50 ppm) that helps to treat facial spots also. Besides, coconut oil can help to keep the skin moisturized and soft, and also protect against skin infection.

Its application is also very simple

7. Garlic

Garlic contains allicin, which acts as an anti-bacterial. It puts a check on the bacterial growth. It also has anti-microbial, anti-oxidant and anti-inflammatory properties. It can be used as a home remedy for pimples. Its hydrochloric extract is used in manufacturing anti-acne gel.

You can prepare garlic paste as required. Add a little bit of honey and a dash of water so that it can blend easily. Apply it and leave for good 15-20 minutes or until it dries. Then wash the face with normal water.

8. Raw papaya juice

Raw papaya has a good amount of vitamin c and is a powerful antioxidant. It has a plentiful amount of bioflavonoids that help prevent microorganisms to colonize. So, this is certainly a good home remedy for pimples. For its application, you have to simply extract a tablespoon of its juice by grinding it and staining. And apply on the acne directly. Leave it for good 15-20 minutes and clean it with cotton.

9. Turmeric

Since everyone is aware of the medicinal values of turmeric so it doesn’t need any introduction. Still, for information purposes it has anti-bacterial, anti-inflammatory and healing properties. It is therefore used as a home remedy for pimples. Above that, it has curcumin, which shows anti-inflammatory as well as anti-microbial properties which makes it effective in treating acne. Moving on to its application part, that is quite simple all you can do it do add a dash of water to it and apply directly on the acne and wash it after 15-20 minutes. You can also use it with other ingredients to make a face pack of it.

10. Tomato

Tomato is a rich source of vitamin c, vitamin k, and other essential micronutrients. It is a good antioxidant. So its application is very beneficial for the treatment of acne.

11. Fuller’s earth (Multani Mitti)

We all grew up watching the multiple applications of this great natural beauty products. It cleans the skin deeply. It is used in many face packs for the same reason. It soaks the excess sebum from our skin and helps to clear the pores of the skin. It also has anti-microbial properties and helps curb the bacterial growth on our skin. It can be applied directly by making a paste of it and even with other ingredients such as neem leaves and turmeric and even honey. The contracting properties of its mask provide relief from blackheads too.

12. Lemon

The citrus nature of lemon doesn’t allow bacteria to grow. Moreover, flavonoids present in it has anti-bacterial properties. It is a great home remedy for pimple treatment. For its application squeeze half lemon into a bowl and add few drops of water to it. Apply on the pimples directly with the help of cotton and leave for 15-20 minutes, then wash it.  If you feel skin irritation you can decrease its concentration by adding a few more drops of water. Consult a dermatologist if irritation persists.

13. Baking soda

Baking soda has anti-inflammatory and antiseptic properties. Which makes it fit for acne treatment. But the excessive use of baking soda can cause dryness in the skin and is sensitive to sun rays. So it should not be used frequently. I would suggest the use of other natural ingredients over it.

Its application is the same as other spot treatments. Simply we have to make its paste by adding water to it. And apply directly on pimples with the help of cotton. Wash it after 15-20 minutes.

14. Apple cider vinegar

It contains many helpful bacteria. Acetic acid and malic acid in apple cider vinegar helps to curb the growth of pimple-causing bacteria (Propionibacterium acnes) If you can bear its smell you are free to use it on your acne spots. Also, keep in mind that it can cause burn to the skin. So it should be diluted with water in a 1 :3 ratio ( 1 part Apple cider vinegar and 3 part water) before its application on the face. For sensitive skin, more water can be added to it. The application should not be more than 30 seconds. And it should be washed with water. Moreover, its application is not effective on severe acne.

15. Neem

Neem oil is beneficial for skin as it is rich in vitamin E, triglycerides, fatty acids and anti-oxidants. However, there is no sufficient data on research on humans. It reduces warts and moles and is effective in treating acne. It can be applied directly on the pimples using cotton. The application should last at least 20 minutes and should be washed by lukewarm water.

16. Rock Salt ( Sendha Namak)

The magnesium in rock salt balances the hormones and reduce the risk of getting pimples. Moreover, it cleans the dead skin and helps the skin to breathe resulting in acne reduction.  It is a natural antiseptic and disinfectant. For its application on the pimple, all you have to do is take a cup of warm water and add 2-3 tablespoon rock salt. Still well and dip a cloth in it. Now spread this cloth all over your face and leave it like that for 4-5 minutes. You have to keep a check on the warmth of the water. It should be adjusted accordingly. Don’t rub the cloth over your skin.

17. Castor oil

Castor oil has antibacterial properties and can help in reducing pimples. Although, there are not sufficient studies supporting the claim. But people still keep using it and getting results. As it is thick so it should be mixed with other oils like coconut oil or olive oil. You should clean your skin before its application. Wash it after 5-10 minutes with lukewarm water or leave it overnight is completely your choice.

18. Sandalwood ( Chandan)

It is an excellent natural and reliable ingredient for beautiful skin. It has a wide range of applications for pimples, dark spots, blackheads, blemishes and much more. It is a must ingredient in most beauty products. It has anti-inflammatory, antiseptic properties and it coagulates skin proteins and protects it from breakouts. However, we should choose a good quality sandalwood powder as most of the companies are doing adulteration by adding Multani Mitti to it. You can even buy complete sandalwood and can grind it yourself.

You can apply it to your skin in multiple ways by making face pack adding honey, turmeric, and rose water to it.

You can even make a face pack by blending it with ripe papaya adding one portion of sandalwood and two parts of ripe papaya. It is very effective in skin rejuvenation.

Let me add up my personal favorite to the list



  1. RIPE PAPAYA 2-3 pieces
  2. RIPE BANANA 2-3 pieces
  3. ALOE VERA GEL 1-2 tablespoon freshly extracted
  4. CUDDAPAH ALMOND ( CHIRONJI ) 5-10 seeds
  5. ALMONDS 2-3 seeds
  6. HONEY 1 tablespoon
  7. FULLER’S EARTH POWDER (MULTANI MITTI)  2-3 tablespoon  


Take 2-3 pieces of ripe papaya

Add an equal amount of ripe banana to it

Now add 1-2 tablespoon of freshly extracted aloe vera to it or aloe vera gel available in the market.

After that, add 5-10 Chironji seeds (ground)

Then add 2-3 almond seeds (ground)

Add 1 tablespoon of honey to it.

Add 2-3 tablespoon of Multani Mitti powder to it.

Blend all the ingredients well and add a few drops of rose water to make a fine paste.


You can add sandalwood to it if inflation is more.


You can also change the proportion of the ingredients according to your needs. But don’t add excessive Multani mitti as it may thicken the paste


Apply it daily for a week to get better results. It is recommended to make fresh paste daily.

Note: Icing the pimple before applying this paste will boost the results.

Try these self-treatment steps too

1. Suppressing the pimple

You can apply ice(wrapped in cotton cloth) on the pimple for 1-2 minutes. It will reduce the inflammation and will make you feel calm.

2. Spot treatment

Here you can do any one of the following spot treatment.

Spot treatment with tea tree oil

For this, you can apply tea tree oil directly on the pimple and leave it for 15-20 minutes and then clean that with cotton.

Lemon and honey on the spot treatment

In order to do that you can take 3-4 drops of lemon and add ½ teaspoon of honey to it. Apply it over the pimples for 15-20 minutes and then clean it with cotton.

Potato juice and cinnamon powder treatment

For doing so, you can take ½ teaspoon of potato juice. ( You can grind and strain potato to get potato juice) and a pinch of cinnamon powder (dalchini). Mix it well and apply on the pimple for good 15-20 minutes and then clean it with cotton.

Raw papaya juice treatment

Grind and strain raw papaya to get the juice. Apply it directly on the pimple for 15-20 minutes and then clean it with cotton.

3. Healing Part

After spot treatment, you need to heal your skin. For that, you have to apply ½ tablespoon of aloe vera and 2-3 mint leaves (paste). Apply it on your face covering all the pimples and leave it overnight. Wash it with water in the morning.

Answer: No, we cannot get rid of pimples overnight. However, we can reduce inflammation so that it would be hard to spot that pimple.

Q2. Is toothpaste good for spot treatment of pimples?

Answer: It will cause more harm than help. It may sometimes give you soothing but that will be temporary. There is no scientific evidence to support the fact
